my cup of tea

This morning, I drank tea.

This is a big step for me.  I’ve gone from 2 cups (yes, my favorite blue mug apparently holds 2 solid cups of coffee) to 1/2 cup within a matter of two weeks.  And not a grumpy headache in sight.

Today I took the final leap.  No coffee.  Just tea.  And for my family’s sake, I hope I don’t get the grumps, but we’ll see. 😉   In the end, it will be well worth it.  My stomach has felt super sensitive lately, and I’d rather not be drinking large amounts of caffeine every. single. morning.

One thing about caffeine withdrawal is that my appetite skyrockets.  Through the roof.  It’s a random side effect that usually only lasts for a day or so.  A good solid breakfast helps.

I made my standard banana oat mix, threw in some flaxseed for the extra omega-3’s and fiber, and filled, filled, filled my almond jar to the brim.

One nut jar down.  Three to go.

Yesterday was my last day working at the school cafeteria!

This was the first rotation of my dietetic internship, so leaving the place felt a little bittersweet.  Yes, I’m ready to move on to something new.  Something different.  But I’ll also miss the food service workers, the kids, and even my daily routine which I was just starting to get used to.

There were many fun experiences involved.  Creating health posters.  Offering food tastings.  Giving presentations on food allergies.  Cooking.  Surveying parents and kids.

Perhaps most of all, I’m going to miss all of these lovely ladies.  They all have huge, huge, huge hearts.  Never once did I feel like I was in the way, as they all made sure to make me feel more than welcome.

Next week, a whole new rotation starts!  For two weeks (before Thanksgiving,) I’ll be working in a veteran’s hospital.  My sum of emotions is excitement and nervousness.  Mostly excitement. 😀

Question: Are you a tea or a coffee drinker?

  1. Reading about your internship makes me so excited about doing mine in two (!!!!) years! Geeze, that seems so far away!! I can’t wait to read about the veteran hospital – I’m sure you’ll meet lots of great men and women there 🙂

I’m definitely a coffee drinker. I drink three coffee cups each morning :-O At least I cut down on my Splenda use…

I wish I liked tea, though. I only like iced sweet tea (helloooo southern US!) and french vanilla tea. All the other kinds taste like dirty water to me. We actually had tea evaluations in food lab (along with red meat..) and I seriously wanted to gag. Sigh, perhaps I’ll like it someday…

  2. Tea is really important in Ireland and we’re very fussy about it-kinda like other nationalities are about coffee! If there are any other Irish readers reading this, they will know what part of the country I’m from when I say Barry’s tea is the best in the world! (Here you’re divided into Barry’s or Lyon’s tea drinkers.) I like my tea STRONG and black…really black and no sugar. Basically, I like a good cup of tar! 🙂 I do drink coffee too and I have my own little “mocha” that I bought in Italy. So, I like my coffee short and very strong too!

  3. I’m still a morning coffee drinker – but I’ve defffinitely cut back lately! Now I have a cup in the morning (though usually only drink half!), potentially a cup of decaf in the afternoon or evening, but that’s it. I’ve found if I have one in the afternoon now, it makes me wicked shakey/nervous. With the cold weather, though, I still want something hot, and I’ve really been enjoying all different kinds of decaf/low caf teas!

Your next intern project sounds exciting – can’t wait to see/hear more!

  4. Oooh good luck next week! Sounds exciting 🙂

I could never, and would never, give up my cup of coffee each morning! I used to drink massive amounts of it, but I’ve cut back to a one [extremely large] mug and that’s the best that I can do 🙂 I don’t really see the point in giving up something that I love so much, especially when it doesn’t really have any negative affects on me (that I can tell, anyway). Good for you though!

    • You’re right! There’s absolutely nothing wrong with a moderate intake of coffee, as long as it doesn’t bother you. In fact, it might even have heart health benefits, which is an added plus! 😀

  5. I love coffee (of course it has to have some sugar 😉 )! However, I have noticed that just after one cup or so I get shakey and my hunger kicks in really quickly. For the rest of the day I feel off. I think I’m just sensitive to the caffeine and it bothers my digestion. 😦 Very sad.

  6. Congratulations on finishing your first rotation! That is so exciting! It’s fun reading about what you’ve been doing.

I not really a hardcore coffee or a tea drinker. In fact, I never used to drink coffee until about 2 weeks ago. Even so, I only have 2 glasses a week! As for tea, I only like Cinnamon Apple Spice. It is so flavorful!

  7. Welcome to the dark side! I <3TEA!!!! i love me a cuppa tea, maybe because im irish!?? ha, over here, a cuppa tea solves all lifes problems, i like mine not too strong, but not too weak, with a bit of milk and sometimes with lotsa honey 🙂
    xx
